How to Choose the Right Tiles for Your Bathroom
Your bathroom tiles need to look great, handle moisture, be slip-resistant, and last for years. With hundreds of options available at South African tile retailers, here’s how to narrow down the best choice for your bathroom renovation.
Porcelain vs Ceramic for Bathrooms
Porcelain tiles have a water absorption rate below 0.5%, making them ideal for wet areas like showers and bathroom floors. Ceramic tiles absorb more water (3–7%) and are better suited for walls and dry areas. For bathroom floors, we almost always recommend porcelain. It costs more upfront but lasts significantly longer in wet environments. Both are available at CTM and Tile Africa.
Slip Resistance Matters
Bathroom floors get wet — and wet tiles can be dangerously slippery. Look for tiles rated R10 or R11 for slip resistance (the R-rating system). Textured, matt, or honed finishes provide better grip than polished or glossy tiles. For shower floors specifically, smaller mosaic tiles with lots of grout lines offer excellent traction.
Tile Size Considerations
Large-format tiles (600x600mm or larger) create a sleek, modern look with fewer grout lines. However, they need perfectly level substrates and experienced installation — especially on shower floors where drainage slopes are critical. Smaller tiles (300x300mm) are more forgiving for uneven surfaces and drainage falls. For small bathrooms, lighter-coloured large tiles can make the space feel bigger.
Popular Bathroom Tile Trends in SA
South African homeowners are currently favouring wood-look porcelain tiles for bathroom floors, large-format marble-effect tiles for walls, and textured 3D tiles for feature walls. Neutral tones (greys, whites, warm beiges) remain the most popular as they’re timeless and easy to accessorise. Bold geometric patterns work well as feature panels in showers.
Budget Tips
Tiles at Leroy Merlin, CTM, and Tile Africa range from R120/m² for basic ceramic to R800+/m² for premium porcelain. Mix expensive feature tiles with affordable plain tiles to stay on budget. Use feature tiles on one wall and complement with simple, matching tiles elsewhere.
